The Harbour
Office

The harbour master keeps the ledgers: berths, dues and debts. The sums of life on land.

The harbour does not sleep. Even before dawn, when the moon has gone thin and pale above the breakwater and the water below moves in slow, black swells, the harbour is already alive.

Ropes creak against iron cleats, and the cold carries the smell of tar and wet stone. A lantern sways in the rigging of a moored vessel, throwing its yellow light in arcs across the dock. Somewhere in the dark, a chain is being loosened, a hatch thrown open, a manifest read aloud to no one in particular.

What a loan really costs

The harbour master reads a debt the way the captain reads the sea: not the first figure, but the whole of it.

Equal monthly payments (annuity), interest compounded monthly. Fees, insurance and taxes not included. Any currency.

The sums of life on land

Houses, loans and the percentages between them. The ledgers every sailor meets when the ship is in port.

The Most Important Investment

Every voyage begins in a harbour full of noise. The book begins there too, with a crowd running for the ships and one vessel that does not move.
