The Bosun's
Locker

Rope, line, lead and tape. Every measure the ship depends on is kept here, and counted.

The crew had come up by then. The bosun first, moving along the deck with his usual economy of motion, assessing what the storm had cost with the practised eye of a man who has done this before and knows approximately what he will find.

The bosun had given the scene a single glance, confirmed what he needed to know, and begun directing the deck hands to the rigging.

Fathoms, cables and knots

The sea keeps its own units. A depth in fathoms, a distance in cables or nautical miles, a speed in knots.

1 fathom = 6 feet = 1.8288 m. 1 cable = one tenth of a nautical mile = 185.2 m. 1 nautical mile = 1,852 m. 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour.

Every other measure

Ashore, the measures change. Length, weight and temperature, from one system to the other.
