Aboard the Anima  ·  On deck, at the mizzen

The Signal Locker

A ship speaks to another without a word: a row of coloured flags, run up the halyard and read from the top down.

There is a sound the harbour makes before a storm. Not the wind — not yet. Something quieter. A stillness that settles over the water like a held breath: the gulls gone silent, the flags hanging limp, the old fishermen on the dock looking at the sky with eyes that have learned to read weather the way others read scripture.

Hoist a word

Every letter has its flag in the International Code of Signals. Type a name, a word, a short message.

Letters A–Z only; spaces become gaps. Flag colours simplified for the screen.

Codes of your own

Flags were made to be read by anyone who knows the code. These make codes for the modern deck.
