Aboard the Anima  ·  On deck, under the lantern

The Night Watch

Midnight to four. The ship sleeps, the lantern swings, and someone must stay awake until the stars fade.

The sky had moved from iron to pewter to a pale, provisional blue. The wind had dropped to a murmur, and the horizon had returned. In the west, where the sky was darkest, a few stars showed through the last of the cloud. They had not moved. The storm had only hidden them.

A word from the ship, scrambled

Every night the watch gets a new one: a part of the ship, a store from the galley, a thing of the sea. Unscramble it before the bell.

A new word at midnight, your time. All the words appear in the book.

Riddles for the long hours

Four hours is a long time to stay sharp. Sailors kept their minds awake with games of words.
